The Pharaohs knew the nutritional and therapeutic value of this fruit, and called it  in hieroglyphics (shuwa). The ancient Egyptians drew many shapes of melon fruits on  many of the walls of their tombs, especially in the Saqqara area. Some archaeologists believe that  melons grew wild in Nubia and the southern valley, especially eastern Sudan.

Nutritional benefits 

Nutrition experts estimate that cantaloupe contains about 92% of its weight as water, 0.7% protein, 0.4% fat, 3.72 %  soluble substances, 0.57% fiber, 0.50% water, 6.9 % sugars, and appropriate amounts of vitamin A and B2, a high percentage of vitamin C, and also very high amounts of minerals that are beneficial to the body, especially sulfur, phosphorus, chlorine, and sodium with potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron  , and copper, all of which are necessary and essential for the health and safety of the body, while moisturizing it and resisting  thirst, and it is also an appetite stimulant. 

Therapeutic properties

Biochemists have found that the inner pulp of the melon contains natural antibiotics that have the ability to disinfect wounds and superficial burns and treat skin infections. Patches are made from the pulp of the melon that are useful in treating superficial burns. It has been found that washing the body with melon water increases the softness and smoothness of the skin. While eating melon fruits greatly helps in quickly building and renewing body tissues and improving the efficiency of the functions of the stomach, intestines, kidneys and urination. Ancient doctors prescribed melon slices to treat patients with vitiligo and melasma as food and a topical treatment in the form of poultices. An American medical study has proven that placing melon slices on tumors helps in quickly removing them.

It is prescribed to treat cases of

Anemia, dysuria, constipation, kidney stones, rheumatism, pulmonary tuberculosis, anal fissures, hemorrhoids, burns, blisters, skin infections and increased skin sensitivity.

Internal uses:
For all the previous cases, it is preferable to eat cantaloupe fruits or its juice in the morning  on an empty stomach, at a rate of one cup per day.

External uses:
For skin inflammation, pimples, spots, and delaying the appearance of wrinkles. Cantaloupe juice is used as a topical lotion once in the morning and once in the evening.

The pulp of the fruit can also be used in slices or mashed form as a topical poultice for at least two hours, 2-3 times a week. This ensures clear, fresh and smooth skin.
